Thomas
Crapper Re-Dedication Ceremony
At long last, there
is to be a re-dedication ceremony for Mr. Crapper's newly-restored grave
at Beckenham Cemetery, Kent organized by the Thomas Crapper and Co. Ltd.
of England. This event will take place in the afternoon of Saturday the
4th May; the Reverend Canon Derek Carpenter, Rector of Beckenham, has
kindly agreed to preside.
They hope to have a gathering of Crappers (would the collective noun be
a 'flush'?) both those who are related and those who share, or used to
share, the surname. In addition, anyone who has an interest in the man
or his trade will be welcome.
At this stage exact plans have not been drawn but we will keep you posted.
As a novelty they are planning to commission a cake in the shape of one
of Mr. Crapper's famous cisterns! However they will not travel too far
into the burlesque - the aim of the day will be a respectful ceremony
followed by a pleasant afternoon or evening. Conversation, some food and
drink, perhaps even an illustrated presentation on the history of the
man and his firm.
